Mitt Romney's "Garments"

Editorial cartoonists have a tradition of drawing politicians in their underwear.  President Clinton is often drawn with his pants around his ankles and boxer shorts with a pattern of little hearts.  The same treatment is due for serial adulterer politicians like Newt Gingrich, Arnold Schwarzenegger and too many members of congress to list. Even Batman and Superman wear their underwear on top of their tights.  As an editorial cartoonist, I cherish my right to draw anyone I want in their underwear.

Mitt Romney is a little different. He doesn’t seem to be an adulterer, and is certainly no superhero. As a devout Mormon, Romney is supposed to wear religious “garments” as his underwear, and I assume he does although he refuses to answer questions about his underwear. If Romney would talk about his underwear, I would be less motivated to draw him in his underwear; Romney’s “garment” silence interests me.  Here are a couple of my cartoons with Romney wearing his Mormon “garments.” I have gotten a bit of flack from readers about drawing the mysterious underwear on Romney, but not as much as I expected, and I’ll keep drawing him this way at least until he talks about his underwear. Poor Bill Clinton will continue to be drawn in his underwear whether he talks about it or not.

This is incredibly disturbing. Daryl you know exactly what you are doing, why you are bringing it up, and frankly it is very unnerving that you would choose to take the position of making Romney explain his faith and its significance instead of doing a simple search on www.lds.org and find out for yourself. Your malicious inquisition speaks to your intolerance of another's cherished faith.

He will not explain them. You know this very well. Don't pretend that drawing Romney like this is the same as drawing Clinton or Newt in their underwear. Frankly it is intellectually dishonest and I am embarrassed for you that you would humiliate/dishonor an entire faith for your petty desire to ruin his presidential chances.

Dear Dr. We will continue to talk about Mr. Romney in great detail. We have made errors in the past of choosing a President and this is a very important job that effects our life and pocketbook.

Haha. Lighten up. If we can't have a chuckle at a candidate's religious underwear, then what is the world coming to?

Is nothing sacred anymore? Just because you can do it should you? What does his religion really have to do with politics, more than being conservative, anyway?

Positutely you must do these cartoons because I said so!  One reason/ well, maybe 2:  It's very funny and [this is deep!]  #2 we have free speech in this country--we are so lucky!!

This is disturbing, and shameful. This isn't funny. It's embarrassing ... to YOU. Find something that's actually worth mocking, why don't you? Maybe something the current president does? He's provided a plethora of mock-worthy behavior. You won't listen, I know that. Just be aware that you're not making any points or any fans with this crude behavior.

Ridiculing the religious garments Latter-day Saints wear is simply insensitive to the beliefs and feelings of millions of people who mean you no harm (unlike those who threatened violence against the Mohammad cartoons). There is no intellectual justification for it. You might as well put a comically large yarmulke on Joe Liebermann every time you draw him. How would you justify that?

What would happen if you drew a cartoon of a rape of a little child? Do you think that is funny, or do people want us to "lighten up"? I have been violated by this "cartoon" - I hope this helps people understand our outrage. We will endure the persecution, hope you can endure yours! Love, God

Mitt Romney's underwear, and for that matter anybody else's, is none of your bloody business.

Maybe you should talk to your psychiatrist about your unhealthy obsessions.

Here's some justification for the special under garment:

Paul counseled: "Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand" (Eph. 6:13). With his prophetic powers, Paul could foresee the wicked conditions that would exist on the earth in our modern day. Therefore, he urged all Saints to have their "loins girt about with truth" (Eph. 6:14), to put on "the breastplate of righteousness" (v. 14), to have their feet shod "with the preparation of the gospel of peace" (v. 15), to grasp "the shield of faith" (v. 16), to place on their heads "the helmet of salvation" (v. 17), to take "the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God" (v. 17), and to pray always (see v. 18) so that they might be preserved. He knew that armor made of truth, righteousness, faith, spirit, and prayer would protect people from the "fiery darts" (v. 16) crafted and thrown by Satan and his henchmen.

The actual garments look kind of uncomfortable. Makes you wonder how Mormons can smile so much.

The most probably unhealthy obsession is probably being so wrapped up in one's faith that you have to wear this underwear.

I think you have an obsession with the word "probably".

Daryl you are a very talented person with cartoon and writing ability. So it really surprises me what first of all is your need to worry so much about peoples' under garments. With the talent you have I would have thought I would be seeing a much higher level subject. If you believe your readers are laughing at such level of humor you are wrong. If you are looking to get Mitt and that is all you have you need to work harder, but what you have done is offended millions of members of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints with your subject.
