Cartoonist Weighs In On Ann Romney’s ‘Tough Choices’

Late last week, Democratic strategist Hilary Rosen unleased a firestorm of criticism on Twitter when she said it was wrong for Mitt Romney to be using his wife Ann as his guide to women’s economic struggles because she “had never worked a day in her life.”

The Romney campaign quickly spun the incident as an attack on stay-at-home moms, creating some cover from the “war on women” moniker Democrats have tagged Romney and the GOP with.

This cartoon by John Cole, the cartoonist at the Scranton Times-Tribune, has received a lot of traffic and feedback, both positive and negative, from our readers…

I asked John to comment on the cartoon, and here’s what he said:

Rosen’s comments unleashed one of those tidal surges of political spin that one only sees in an election year. I personally don’t think she insulted stay-at-home moms, but that’s another argument.

What I found and continue to find hilarious are the repeated, stumbling attempts by Mitt Romney (and now his wife, Anne) to portray himself as the Average Joe (and now Josephine). They’re obviously not. That said, I hope they keep the act up; it’s provided great fodder for many a cartoonist.

Cartoon is Fair b/c this whole "controversy" is ridiculous. Rosen had a point, but she is an employee of CNN. According to her contract there, she can't work for any campaign apparatus while working for CNN. The president agrees that stay at home moms work hard & he does speak for Dems. The biggests controversy ever on which both parties agree.

When Anne Romney has had to forgo a doctors appointment so her kids can have christmas or birthday presents, when Anne Romney has had to go without toiletries so her kids can buy a book from the book fair at school, when Anne Romney has had to choose between buying groceries and taking her kids to the dentist, when Anne Romney has had to shell out nearly half her paycheck for child care, then she can talk. Otherwise, she just needs to stop. It's making her look like a jerk.

At first I worked FT while my husband went to school and took care of our son, then I worked part time, then was a stay at home mom, and now a single mom who also works FT...so being a good mom is hard work...however, I do not see how Anne Romney would have a clue about the financial worries of the majority of American moms, ( or dads for that matter) regardless of their employment situation.

Like to read about these working moms who think they are better than the stay at home moms. Guess that those that work seem like they are better than those that stay home. only problem is that it is individual choice in many circumstances and the family situation makes the decision. Those of us that are able to provide a good income to the family appreciate the dedication of our spouse to raising the family, providing the counseling, training of the children, and giving much of their time to charities, fund raisers, cancer drives, as possible. My wife "works" from 6AM to 10PM seven days a week and the family appreciates the results.
