Conservative cartoonist Gary McCoy is no stranger to controversey. After Rush Limbaugh called Sandra Fluke a “slut” for defending President Obama’s healthcare policy forcing insurance companies to cover contraceptives, McCoy drew a harsh cartoon about Fluke that seemed to set the internet on fire:

Following Fluke’s address to the Democratic National Convention last night, McCoy has drawn another harsh cartoon about the Georgetown Law School graduate that has riled up our readers and been criticized as misogynistic:

I asked Gary to comment about the cartoon, and here’s what he sent me:
Why is it that a group of people so adept at filling out welfare claim forms while simultaneously watching Family Guy, and able to ignite an American flag using only a pair of reading glasses and two, foot-long strands of underarm hair, are so lost when it comes to understanding a simple cartoon? My recent Sandra Fluke cartoon seems to have infuriated many of the same crowd who popped blood vessels over my last Fluke cartoon, and are just now hanging their Anger Management Class diplomas on their bedroom walls.
To me, it’s hilarious that the left was so incredulous at Clint Eastwood’s RNC speech, in which he, in improv-like fashion, mocked an imaginary President Obama sitting in an empty chair onstage (a perfect metaphor at that.). Yet, they see nothing wrong with inviting for their convention, a divisive, hard-core, pro-abortion ‘women’s rights advocate’ who, despite what her camouflaged congressional testimony held, has in fact pushed for government subsidized (i.e., taxpayer funded) birth control and contraceptives.
And for those whose definition of a misogynist is anyone who criticizes an extremely ideological feminist who complains before the nation that despite attending Georgetown University on a $40,000 scholarship, she can’t afford nine-dollar-a-month birth control, I can only say, shave your armpits for crying out loud! You’re blocking my view.
Here’s a sampling of our readers’ thoughts:
Jerry Chandler: Since her testimony was about medical issues and this cartoon still flogs the lie told by the right about what she said – Foul.
Sherry Russell: Why is a beautiful young woman portrayed as Bella Abzug?
Mike Villwock: While he didn’t completely quote limbaugh in this cartoon by avoiding the use of the word ‘slut’, he leaves no doubt of his low opinion of women by suggesting that those you use birth control are out there whoring it up.
Keith Lewis Simmons: It’s not funny because the issue isn’t all about having sex, unless you’re an ignorant rube. The truth is that hormone therapy is life-saving for many, many women. And men. (See, that’s funny. Not insulting to women’s health, just their psyche.)
Daniel Shrader: Did any of these conservatives actually listen to this woman’s testimony, or did they just get all their info from the fat ass Limbaugh.
Bob Flisser: McCoy is one of the finest minds of the 12th Century.
Julie Slapyawitmah Palm: Heath care for men – totally fine and not worth mentioning, even when Viagra is included. Health care for women – paying people to be “sluts,” as Rush put it. Misogyny.

Macoy is a women hating moron who thinks by going after a young lady that has done nothing but speak her mind in a country that encourages free thought, free speach and the right to chose. Can the GOP. make a comment about our side without attacking with Vulgor, offensive women hating slurs that show that maturity and intellectual of those who vote for the Rep. party
"offensive women hating slurs that show that maturity and intellectual of those who vote"
you need to clean up your writing skills. poor communication weakens your argument..
kind of like how Bill Maher,David Letterman make sexist vulgarer comments about Sara Palin and Michelle Bachman
A rabid feminism and political motivations that run counter to religious freedom are fodder for humorists. The left has been relentlessly vicious toward conservative women. Either you play on a level field or admit you are not at all fair and open minded. Fluke is over the top, and Mr.McCoy has captured that image with his able hand. I love the sound of small minded heads exploding in irony. This man is now over the target and scoring hits.
Is he making fun of her? Yes, we can all agree on that. The point this debate revolves around is what the government can or cannot force private health insurance companies to cover. If you relate it to E.D. medication, the government is not requiring health insurance companies to unanimously cover Viagra, that is the choice they as a private provider are allowed just as many decide to cover birth control.
I bet if men could get pregnant, birth control would be provided by insurance!
yes, and if women ran everything life would be perfect...quack
Interesting...two comments; one person talks about the issue motivating Gary's cartoon, and succinctly opines on why Gary's cartoon tackles a real issue that is worthy of debate.
The other one starts by making an ad hominem attack , then goes on to claim that a featured speaker at the Democratic National Convention (being broadcast to a national audience), should be off-limits to any critiques or mischievous political cartooning, and, then ends with a gratuitous slur for anyone who dares to vote for Republican candidates. And, all of this stated in a nearly-incomprehensible, mish-mash of bad grammar, misspellings and hypocritical whining about the unfairness of this particular political cartoonist!
Apparently, RevLaLa doesn't understand that political cartooning is the province of conservatives as well as liberals. I understand that there is a great disparity in the numbers, but conservatives still have the right to engage in this time-honored profession.
Well, a third comment posted before mine...mygalsal50 got in before me, and her comment was not addressed in my post.
GBinSD - the point is that Fluke made a reasoned argument about an important issue but the response of the GOP and its allies has been hateful, and often filthy, adhominem attacks. The critics of the cartoon are not attacking the cartoonist's right to publish. they are attacking the content and bigotry that the cartoon displays.
Personally, I'd like to thank the GOP extremists for these attacks. These bigots are doing a great job educating the vast majority about the vile and hateful nature of the GOP and the radical right.
I am no great fan of the Dems and Obama but the GOP continues to set new records in the areas of ignorance, hatefulness and bigotry.
filthy? c'mon, i know you watch bill markowitz, kathy griffin, etc. they spew vile hatred on private citizens all of the time. you can't have it both ways
The point was lost when you commented on party politics. It is an attack on religious institutions. The press conference was pure agitprop. Conservatives are the target Joe,and you are useful to the meme spewers.
dreamjoehill...wake up! Is this the first political cartoon you've ever seen? ALL POLITICAL CARTOONISTS HAVE A POINT OF VIEW...and, quite often use sarcasm, ridicule and unflattering images to drive home their views. Apparently, you don't like either party, but you're only aware of the Republicans hate and vitriol?! I don't think you're quite as on-the-fence as you purport to be.
By the way, I don't agree that Ms. Fluke...made a reasoned argument about an important issue...what she did was go to a Catholic institution, with a well known doctrine regarding the dissemination and use of condoms, and proceeded to demand that they supply her and others with said item. This is as reasonable as someone enrolling at Harvard, and expecting them to cease teaching Evolution in favor of Creationism. You don't go to Harvard if you want to major in Creationism, and you don't go to a Catholic institution looking for birth control! I can't help thinking that you would consider the Harvard student in my analogy to be worthy of ridicule and parody.
NBC doesn't share one conservative comment about the cartoon. No bias at NBC though! Not one person who thinks Fluke is a shrill feminist who wants government to be involved in birth control.
At the risk of being pedantic, Ms Fluke did not give testimony. She spoke at a press conference dressed up to look like a congressional hearing. She was denied access to the hearing- not because she was a woman, or held contrary views but, because she had no expertise on the subject of the hearing - the establishment clause of the constitution - and because the democratic members of the committee submitted her name after the deadline to nominate participants.
Haahaahaa, excellent cartoons which capture the look of Sandra Fluck & the foolishness of Democrats. Gary McCoy is a true artist.
Her rambling, incoherent address to the DNC reveals Fluke to be exactly what she is--a community agitator with an agenda, and none too smart.
Mr. McCoy is the epitome of what a good old boy does. Denigrates, and pokes fun of others. How do you spell 'BIGOT'?
Keep up the good work McCoy, you have made a communist vote for the Dems! You're a cartoonist, draw yourself walking in lock step behind the likes of Limbaugh, without an original thought in your empty head!
