  • Debt Ceiling Cartoons

The United States is on track to hit its debt ceiling of $14.294 trillion by May 16. I read that since March 1962, the debt ceiling has been raised 74 times, ten of those occurring since 2001. The Obama administration has said that raising the debt ceiling is necessary to avert a financial catastrophe, yet some Republicans like Michele Bachmann seem ready and willing to call his bluff.

What do the nation's cartoonists think about this latest budget flap? Check out our Debt Ceiling cartoon slideshow to find out.

  • Royal Wedding

Tomorrow's the big day. Prince William will marry commoner Kate Middleton in a ceremony full of pomp and ceremony that has pushed the British monarchy on us, thanks to our ever-loving media that has been covering every minute detail leading up to the big event.

Cartoonists have their own thoughts about those crazy kids getting hitched. Check them out in our new Royal Wedding cartoon slideshow.

  • Cartoonists React To Trump And Birth Certificate

Barack Obama was born in the United States. He is officially an American. The President released his long-form birth certificate today in reaction to increasing calls, let by loud-mouthed clown and GOP front-runner Donald Trump, that he was somehow born on foreign land and not eligible to be our commander-in-chief.

Trump has latched onto this birther issue, devolving himself as a serious candidate. Based on his reaction to the news today, I might have to change my cartoon to have Trump asking, “Where are Obama’s school records?”

I laughed at Nate Beeler’s cartoon for the Washington Examiner, showcasing the resiliency of the birther movement…

While Pulitzer Prize-winner Mike Keefe of the Denver Post suggests the birther’s next line of attack…

Green Bay Press-Gazette cartoonist Joe Heller shows that the birthers will always find a reason to doubt Obama’s authenticity…

While conservative cartoonist Mike Lester of the Rome News-Tribune thinks the birther issue distracts voters from things the should REALLY be concerned about…

  • Tax the Rich

As politicans argue about the best way to fix the United States long-term debt problems, President Obama is calling for tax increases on the richest Americans. Republicans, let by Wisconsin congressman Paul Ryan, have said they won't consider any tax increases as part of their plan. In fact, Ryan's plan cuts botht he upper-income tax rate and the corporate tax rate.

So what do cartoonists think of this budget battle? Check out our Tax the Rich cartoon slideshowto find out.

  • Dilbert Creator Criticizes Paltrow-Bashing

    Keli Goff

One of our newest syndicated columnists, Keli Goff (check out her columns here), wrote a column last week criticizing Gwyneth Paltrow for her suggestion that “everything in my life that’s good is because I worked my ass off to get it and to maintain it.”

As Goff noted, Paltrow was born to Hollywood royalty and credits “Uncle Steven” for landing one of her first film roles (that’s Steven Spielberg, for those keeping score at home), advantages most people don’t have to help them along. She went on to write “that like a lot of privileged people, [Paltrow's] under the delusion that she earned everything that she has, and then has the audacity to gloat about it.”

Well, this obviously upset Dilbert creator Scott Adams, who wrote on his blog that Goff is wrong to attack poor Gwyneth, claiming her column lacks the proper context.

Adams went on to write this:

“It’s worth noting, in the interest of context, that Goff was born with a few advantages herself. She’s beautiful, smart, and apparently had the resources she needed to make it through NYU and go on to get her Master’s Degree at Columbia University.  If you ask Goff what made her successful, would she credit her hard work and leave out her other obvious advantages? Or would she answer honestly and say, “I worked hard for what I’ve achieved, but it didn’t hurt that I’m a brilliant, smoking-hot African-American woman in 2011.” I’m just saying that people don’t generally talk about their advantages. To do so would be…wait for it…gloating.”

So Adams seems to be making the case that the only reason why Goff went to NYU and got her master’s degree at Columbia University is because she is a “brilliant, smoking-hot African-American woman.”

So what do you think? Should Goff has not been so quick to criticize Paltrow when Goff herself has the advantage of being a “brilliant, smoking-hot African-American woman?”

  • No Jobs for Grads

As we continue to experience a jobless recovery, colleges and universities across the country are about to unleash hundreds of thousands of recent graduates loaded with student loan debt into our unstable job market.

  • Happy Earth Day

Happy Earth Day! Each April 22, Earth Day marks the anniversary of what many consider the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970. The idea came to founder Gaylord Nelson, then a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, after witnessing the aftermath of the horrific 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara, California.

Check out what cartoonists think of the environmental holiday with our Earth Day cartoon slideshow.

  • Donald Trump For President

Donald Trump for President? Might not be as far-fetched as you think. A recently released Pew Research poll shows that Trump has the highest profile among GOP hopefuls, and polls last week showed The Donald ahead of the rest of the GOP pack, including Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney.

What does the elevation of Donald Trump as a serious presidential candidate mean for jobs? Well, for starters, there should be some job job security for the nation's cartoonists. Check out their take in our Donald Trump for President cartoon slideshow.

  • BP Oil Spill - One Year Later

One year ago, the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, eventually leaking two-and-a-half million gallons of oil a day into the surrounding waters. More than 200 million gallons were leaked into the Gulf before it was all said and done.

During the nearly three months it took to shut down the well, cartoonists responded to every breaking detail with their own unique brand of indignation and satire.

Take a look back at the best cartoons drawn about the disaster in the gulf with our BP Oil Spill - One Year Later cartoon slideshow.

  • Fidel Castro Out In Cuba

    Castro is out.

For the first time since Cuba’s 1959 revolution, Fidel Castro was not included in the Communist Party’s leadership, and someone other than Fidel or Raúl has been name to the second-highest position in the Communist Party.

We all knew this day would come, but it’s still shocking to reflect on the longevity of Fidel as the leader of Cuba.

It’s interesting looking back at my cartoons about Fidel and his iron-grip for so many years on the Cuban people.

I drew this cartoon back in 2006 when Fidel was undergoing intestinal surgery and provisionally handed over power for the first time to his younger brother Raul.

Now Raul will be expected to set a new economic course for Cuba. The congress’ approval of a package of more than 300 reforms is an admission that the status quo isn’t working.

It’s always fun to end things on a joke. Looking back at my archive of Castro cartoons, Fidel is no exception.

  • Randall Enos on Glenn Beck

    Randall Enos / Cagle Cartoons

Randall Enos is a brilliant illustrator and cartoonist whose work has appeared in the The New York Times, NBC, National Lampoon, Playboy,Time and a host of other publications. Recently, Cagle Cartoons has begun syndicating his unique linocut cartoons to newspapers across the country, and the venerable illustrator has taken to blogging.

Here is a snippet from a recent blog post that Enos wrote about Glenn Beck losing his popular Fox News show. I wanted to share it because the post is great, and the caricature Enos created of Glenn Beck is fantastic and made me giggle:

I feel sorry for Glenn Beck.

I really do. The reason is that I’m beginning to come to the awful realization that he is actually crazy. Of course I’m basing this solely on my observation of his lunatic ravings, body language and general all-around demeanor… but I think I’m right. I don’t mean crazy like Sarah Palin, Limbaugh, Hannity, O’Reilly, Bachmann and the Donald are crazy. I mean actually “mental institution” crazy. Because of this, I feel very bad about the way I have parodied and caricatured him. I realize now that I have been making fun of a person with an actual mental illness. Has any one else noticed this condition on his part?  Fox has dumped him primarily out of economical concerns of course but I can’t help but feel that someone up in the ivory towers of Fox Snooze might have also realized the mental illness. He needs help and it’s no laughing matter. He’s a millionaire who has gone mad. A potentially bad pairing…money and madness. His radio show will continue and perhaps another TV show and therein lies the menace because some people ACTUALLY believe his ravings. Who knows what that could lead to.

  • Mike Keefe Wins Pulitzer

I’m very pleased to announce that Mike Keefe, who is syndicated by Cagle Cartoons and is a long-time staffer for The Denver Post,  is the winner of the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning, the highest award any member of the media can win.

The Pulitzer judges said he was awarded the prize “for his widely ranging cartoons that employ a loose, expressive style to send strong, witty messages..”

Keefe is a two-time Fischetti Award winner, and has also won both the Sigma Delta Chi Award and the National Headliner Award. This is his first Pulitzer, although he was a Pulitzer juror in 1997 and 1998.

“I am gobsmacked,” Keefe told The Post. “In recent years, the Pulitzer has gone to much younger folks, who are newer in the business. I thought my day had passed.” (Here’s a pic of Keefe getting congratulated by his Editorial Page Editor upon hearing the news)

Here is a slideshow featuring all 20 of his Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoons.

  • Tax Day Cartoons

Today is Tax Day, and for many, this means finally getting around to finishing your taxes, writing out that check to Uncle Sam and waiting in line at the Post Office to make sure you meet the all-important midnight deadline.

Everyone hates paying taxes, but cartoonists despise them. If you have five minutes to take a break from your 1040, enjoy a laugh at our funny Tired of Taxes cartoon slideshow.

  • This Week in Political Cartoons – 4/15/11

We've just posted our huge Week in Review cartoon slideshow, and what's on everyone's mind this week? Taxes, taxes, taxes!

Whether it's the small business owner sweating bullets trying to finish his 1040 in time, or politicians on Capital Hill bickering and arguing about what out taxes can really afford, that dirty "t" word seems to be everywhere. Which infuriates bankrupt birther Donal Trump, who can't abide the media overlooking him.

So pull yourself away from your calculator and check out our Week in Political Cartoons slideshow.

  • Barry Bonds Cartoon Slideshow

Talk about being juiced! For years, cartoonists have been drawing cartoons about that cheating, steroid-injecting egomaniac Barry Bonds. Now, the lawyers have caught up with everyone else, convicting the former Giants slugger of obstruction of justice.

To check out how cartoonists have depicted Bonds since breaking Hank Aaron's home run record*, check out our new Bonds Guilty cartoon slideshow.

Mike Lester / Rome News-Tribune (click to view slideshow)

RELATED: Daryl Cagle's Barry Bonds cartoons

    * - Hank Aaron never cheated, and Barry Bonds will never be elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

  • Guilty Bonds

Barry Bonds, the former San Francisco Giants slugger that defined the steroid era of baseball, has been found guilty of obstructing justice for lying about taking performance-enhancing drugs.

Is this really a surprise? Looking back at our cartoon archives, it seems that everyone came to the conclusion that Bonds was guilty of steroid use years ago. Not to mention that it’s Bonds own arrogance that ended up convicting him. Don’t forget that it was Bonds, under oath before a grand jury nearly eight years ago, who twisted his way around straight-forward questions about steroid use.

I’ve done a good number of Barry Bonds cartoons over the years. Here are some of my favorites:

  • Obama, Republicans and the Budget

Today, Barack Obama gave a speech detailing his approach to deficit reduction, offering a contrast to the “Path of Prosperty” that Congressman Paul Ryan proposed last month. Obama’s plan includes both cuts in military spending and tax increases for the wealthiest Americans (something the Republicans don’t seem to be able to stomach).

Republicans seem more hell bent on pushing their social agenda than honestly reducing the deficit, and if Obama’s proven anything since taking office, it’s what a lousy negotiator he is …

It’s tough to hear Obama talk seriously about cutting the budget. Since coming into office, Obama has been forced to deal with a massive recession and job loss, as well as a massive deficit he inherited from his predecessors. As a result, he’s been up to his big ears in red ink…

Meanwhile, Republicans have no problems cutting money from the budget, as long as it has nothing to do with the military or rich folks…

Republicans’ favorite target recently has been civil servants with their outrageous $50,000 salaries. The billions Wall Street has fleeced out of the economy and the middle class over the last decade doesn’t seem to bother them much…

At least that’s something they share with Obama…

    … despite their claims …

  • Royal Wedding Cartoons

As the Royal Wedding between Britain's Prince William and Kate Middleton on April 29 nears, the world is fixated on every bit of news coming out of the event. From Victoria Beckham panicking over her wedding dress to the release of a Royal Wedding coin collection by the Australian mint, it seems we need to know every detail of this blessed union.

  • Obama 2012 Cartoons

The political world exhaled a giant yawn at the news that President Obama is seeking re-election. The only thing surprising is the lack of any serious Republican front-runners to take him on.

That might not be such a big problem for the GOP, if Obama's weaknesses are as strong as the cartoonists making fun of him seem to think. Check out our Obama 2012 cartoon slideshow to decide yourself.
